The importance of solar shading this summer

Shade first, and use active cooling such as air conditioning only if needed.

Solar shading is a vital tool for improving comfort, reducing energy consumption and developing climate-resilient buildings.

As heatwaves become more frequent and intense across the world, the number of air conditioning units in Europe is expected to jump to 275 million by 2050 according to research by The International Energy Agency.

Extra energy to power indoor cooling means more carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. At a time of rising energy prices, it also means increasing costs for households, businesses and organisations.

But there is another solution.

Shading is a sustainable measure that helps reduce – or even removes – the need for active cooling measures helping us keep comfortable during hot summer weather.

The use of shading to stay cool in the summer months is not a new idea – it has been around for hundreds of years!

Modern, innovative materials combined with smart shading technologies maximise the effectiveness of blinds, shutters and awnings.

How does shading make a difference?

  • Prevents heat from entering the building up to 90% with external shading
  • Supports cooler indoor temperatures for better sleep between 4° and 8° degrees depending on the type of shading, façade orientation and user operation
  • Supports better sleep, a key factor for recovery, cognitive performance and overall health
  • Eliminates disruptive glare that can cause headaches and eye strain

Global Shading Day is an awareness day on March 21 each year that provides advice and expertise about the benefits of shading throughout the seasons.

Anders Hall, President of the European Solar Shading Organisation which leads Global Shading Day, said: “Record-breaking summer temperatures and more prolonged droughts with days exceeding 35°C are becoming more common. Regions such as southern Europe are facing critical levels of heat stress.

“Shading – and especially external shading – prevents heat from the sun entering our homes, workplaces and public spaces during the summer months.

“This means we can reduce the need for air conditioning and save energy. It means we can feel cooler, healthier and happier during the summer months.”
